One Year To Go Until The Vancouver Olympics
In just about one year, the Vancouver Winter Olympics will be held. Located around the Vancouver area (the ski events will be held in Whistler), the city is getting ready for a major influx of people. As with any major event, the whole goal is to make some money during the event and attract new visitors by the coverage.
If you’ve never been to an Olympics, it’s an experience worth having. While the events are a blast to watch, one of the greatest parts of the Olympics is meeting people from around the world. For example, during the Salt Lake City Olympics, places like the Holland Heineken House and the Norway House was open to the public. Americans could mingle with braided, dancing Dutch men on the night that the speed-skating team swept the medals.
Or, if you were looking for something a little more relaxing, you could hang out at the Norway House. Here, you could grab an Aass Beer and watch a movie down the hall. As you can see, there’s more to the Olympics than just the events.
While many are looking forward to the Olympics coming up, our trip planning and the trip planning of many others has hit a snag. Housing is almost impossible to get, or it’s really expensive. The Olympic Committee has many hotels fully booked in both Vancouver and Whistler, and these hotels have no idea when the rooms are going to be released. On sites like www.Viscape.com, you can find an affordable vacation home for around $500 a night for 14 people, which would break down nicely. But, most other vacation homes are going for almost $1,000 a night for only two people.
While there are plenty of festivities to enjoy at an Olympic Games, the events are the main draw, and many Americans are now stuck without tickets to their favorite events. The ticket process in the U.S. was a nightmare. CoSport’s site crashed due to a robot takeover. People would get as far as the check-out, and then the whole system would crash. While many are being offered what was in their cart, if you were hoping for additional tickets, you pretty much have to rely on Craigslist or some other site. The scalpers are going to have a field day.
The major hope is that housing and tickets will soon open up. If not, many people in this tough economy are going to have to rethink or even cancel their plans.
