How To Speak French
For any native English speaking person considering learning a second language, French can be an irresistible option. To begin with, the two languages have much in common. For instance, many words in French and English are spelled the same and have the same meaning. This gives the English speaker an immediate advantage when learning French. And it can even help you learn a bit more about the English language too.
You will be able to speak to many people if you speak French as it is spoken in some form throughout the world. It is viewed as a world language and this is seen by the number of world organizations like the UN and IOC that recognize it as an official language. Thus you can open doors in terms of career opportunities if you have a fluent level of French. So if you are decided that French is the language for you then you probably want to learn it as fast as possible. I can't blame you as the best part of learning a new language is being able to speak to people.
Talking to people has the added advantage that it increases learning and motivates a student. The other things, like learning vocabulary or how to form verb endings, are pretty monotonous but important nonetheless. So what is the best way to learn French so that the tedious stuff is minimal and the good stuff is accented ? This article will deal with the best way how to learn to speak French.
Most people agree that the best way how to learn to speak French is to take an immersion course. Doing a language course in the country where that language is spoken is the essence of an immersion course. So you could do a course in a part of France or many other countries where it is spoken by the locals, like Switzerland or Belgium for instance.
However, taking a course in another country is not always suitable for many people. To start, you need plenty of free time to do something like this. Many people might do something like this in a gap year in between school and college. Thus many people choose to do it in between school and college or in between jobs. It will also take a fair amount of money, depending on where you plan to go and how long you plan to stay there.
But the benefits are certainly there. I think there are two reasons why French immersion learning is good. The first and foremost is that you must talk French. No one will speak your native tongue so this will force you to think and speak in theirs. You lose the habit of thinking in English that is hard to lose if you are still living in your native country. You quit being concerned about sounding silly when you speak simply because you have to speak. All the excuses that you may make when learning a second language in your native country seem trivial when you have to communicate simply to get by.
The 2nd reason is that all the effort you put in seems to have a focal point. You can use what you have learned. This acts as further motivation to continue learning the language, even the tedious stuff like grammar. So being able to order a meal or have a conversation in a bar will motivate you. And the tangible smells, sounds and sights that you see at a cafe or in the street reinforce your learning making it easier to understand. Speaking to real people will also give you more confidence too.
Doing a French immersion course is the best way to learn French in my opinion, however it is no idle undertaking. It will add up in terms of price and free time. This may simply not be an option for many people that have commitments in their own country. Thus other ways that give more flexibility are classes or home study courses. In fact, some people even prefer to take a home study course as a primer before they undertake an immersion type course.
