Why Hunt With A Magnifying Reflex Sight?
The original Trijicon ACOG magnifying rifle sight was introduced 25 years ago and is still selling well. Given the choice of the world’s magnifying combat optics, the US Army and Marine Corps, British Army and Israeli Defence forces opted for the Trijicon ACOG. Trijicon earned total market domination by coming up with a product that was utterly rugged, had brilliant optics, would function in all lighting condiitons and battle ranges and would adapt to any direct fire weapon. Trijicon came up with the ‘Bindon Aiming Concept’ that puts an illuminated aiming mark on the target with both eyes open aiming. Trijicon revolutionised rapid sighting with their Bindon Aiming Concept, putting an illuminated aiming mark directly on the target for both eyes open shooting. This mark is available in different shapes for different applications in up to four colors. It can be combined with ranging, ballistically compensated reticles to cover the full spectrum of ranges out to the envelope of the .50BMG cartridge.
How does this translate to a hunting? More and more hunters are reaping the benefits of ultra rugged precision optics with the benefits of very rapid both eyes open aiming. A lot of hunting is done at very short ranges – for example turkey hunting and deer hunting in back woods. In these circumstances it can be a lot more important to take the shot quickly than to shoot with sub-MOA precision. Cross hairs are easily lost against the clutter in the dim light that typically prevails under the forest canopy. A low magnification reflex sight like the TA44SR-10 ACOG offers the benefits of the rapid target acquisition of a red dot sight with the magnification to discriminate targets in dense underbrush. Just place the aiming mark on the Turkey’d neck and squeeze off the shot – no more taking the head off the comb to find a view of a fleeing turkey.
With deer, modern cartridges allow shots to be taken without range compensation out to 250 yards. The vast majority of deer in the Eastern states are taken at shorter ranges than this. You won’t want to exclude the possibility of taking a longer shot should the need arise. The last thing you want when that deer finally appears is to wonder if you’ve dialled in the right direction or started from zero. Whilst some scopes have neat ways of avoiding some of these problems, it’s so much easier just to lift the muzzle and place the correct aiming mark on the kill zone. Whilst the aiming marks are set up for the 5.56mm M855 and 7.62mm M80 rounds, you can easily go out and see where your own rounds impact relative to the marks from a 100 meter zero.
The intermediate magnification ACOGs like the Trijicon TA33-8 make a terrific predator shooting system when combined with an AR15 rifle with a good trigger. Once again you have the bindon aiming concept providing rapid target acquisition and centring with both eyes open shooting, backed by stadia to take longer range shots with confidence. These sights can be retrofitted or, with the TA01NSN-RMR ACOG for example are supplied with a top mounted red dot sight for very close, fleetingly exposed targets that can appear in coyote shooting. Higher magnification ACOGs are a great option for mid range varminting where critters pop out of holes unexpectedly at varied ranges. The ACOG’s relatively low magnification and great optics will keep it shooting long after your high powered varmint scope has become useless due to low light.
You don’t want a sight to spook your quarry. ACOGs can be fitted with a ‘killflash’ shroud that totally eliminates the possibility of flash from the red dot scope’s objective lens.
A huge benefit of ACOGs is that there are no batteries to run out or electronics to fail on you. The BAC aiming mark (and sometimes the reticle) uses fiber-optic illumination by day and a tritium light source by night.
Finally, the ACOG is as rugged as it gets. Mount your ACOG on a rigid 1913 Picatinny rail and it will not lose zero. Remove and replace it and it will repeat to within 1 MOA. Designed for military use, the ACOG will resist exposure to everything nature can throw at it including water pressure down to 80ft. Hunting opportunities are often rare and expensive in today’s busy world. That’s not a good time to have a high quality but delicate telescopic sight fail on you. The ACOG is the magnifying sight of choice of the armed forces of the western world. Civilian hunters have long assimilated the best of military technology, the Mauser and AR15 actions, the .30-06, .308 and .223 cartridges, VHF radio, 4×4 vehicles and GPS. Moving to ultra rugged magnifying reflex sights is the next step in a long tradition.
