The simple wooden cross with a draped cloth over the cross beams is left empty, symbolizing the risen Christ, The Orthodox Catholic, and other religious crosses, feature crosses with Christ still hanging, with a crown of thorns, and vines are sometimes wrapped around an empty cross.

For those who wish to have a permanent funeral for a deceased friend or loved one, tatoo crosses can be personalized with dates, and names. This can be a very cathartic means of grief therapy. For Catholics tattoo featuring a draped rosary, can be a symbol of abiding faith, and a means of counting the beads in time of stress, without having a rosary in their hands.
