Economic Strategies for Tribal Alliances
Economic Strategies for Tribal Alliances
By
Terrance H. Booth, Sr. – Tsimshian Tribe
We as Native people know that from the beginning of this country; as tribal people we have imposed upon us controlling directives more than any other minority in America. It governs our life and our very existence having tribal policies, regulations, congressional acts, Tribal Laws, Presidential Executive Orders, adverse or favorable federal or state legislation, land taken away, land returned, some tribes put on a very long standing list awaiting decades to simply become a federally recognized tribe, gross mis-management of “our” tribal trust funds and depending who is elected into office of President either in battle stance or find favor with new Presidential Administration. Some presidents have implemented workable policies governing Indian Affairs. In today’s setting us as Tribes have many tribal programs supposedly designed to bring improvements to the tribal economies. It is time to create our own tribally oriented perspectives on becoming the true tribal global warriors and build a force that will be noticed world-wide. Some of us have natural resources need by our neighbors, population growth buffering right up to our tribal boundaries mandates attention looking at the population growth around us as opportunities rather than an annoyance.
Tribal economic status of all of Indian Country, USA requires immediate attention; that we as tribal people take actions steps to address our tribal economies seeking betterment for the good of our tribal people within their current settings and that we build a prosperous future for generations to come. Every 10 years the US Census usually reports the state of affairs for Indian Country, USA in most cases it always has poverty in double digit numbers with each 10 year report. What has been done by the federal government to eliminate poverty from all of our tribal people in Indian Country, USA? In the 220 some years of the US Government handling of Indian Affairs we still face poverty with today’s figures as high as 80% unemployment within some of the tribal settings.
In recent years with the introduction of Native gaming among some of our tribes through diversification of revenues earned tribes have taken over several government programs under tribal self-governance act. Prior to gaming and its economic impact several tribes their economic setting was one of struggling with their life and existence to merely survive.
Outstanding tribal business concepts are starting to develop in different parts of Indian Country, USA. In the State of Montana February of 2006 the Indian Businesses of Montana formed Montana Business Indian Business Alliance. By joining together as Native Alliances it has benefits of cutting costs, utilizing all of our tribal expertise, more of an impact establishing Native Products, establishing global markets, sharing of business expenses, and creation of more jobs and business for our tribal people. Bring closure to the tribal economic leakages of our tribal settings and creation of substantial tribal wealth development.
t’s Mission: MIBA Mission
“The Montana Indian Business Alliance promotes private Indian business development by maximizing and developing resources that encourage and support Montana Indian Entrepreneurs.”
MIBA Objectives
To be a pro-active network and resource advocate for Indian business.
To be a catalyst for Indian entrepreneur growth and enhancement.
To promote successful Indian Country business environments.
To foster accessibility to financial resources (http://www.mibaonline.org/about.html
Within Indian Country, USA there are Native businesses that serve as examples that warrant serious consideration and in-depth analysis and review to the beginnings of a National Native Business Alliance and strategically with the formation by regions so the tribes in different regions can better establish geographically Native alliances to enhance serving their tribal domain and to their surrounding neighbors. On their own merit Native Companies are becoming very successful even moving to the ranks of Fortune 500 Companies of America. Through a National Native Business Alliance this writer sees formation of 12 regional National Native Business Alliances for the Tribes within each of the regions including:
Alaska
Eastern
Eastern Oklahoma
Great Plains
Midwest
Navajo
Northwest
Pacific
Rocky Mountain
Southern Plains
Southwest
Western
Formation of Regional Native Business Alliances
National Native Business Alliance proposed mission is to transform current Alaska Native and Native American Economies into profitability, strengthen Native Individually owned and operated businesses and tribal businesses and connect Tribally Oriented networks of Tribal or Native owned independent businesses dedicated to building substantial tribal wealth development for the Alaska Native and Native American Economies
Native American Tribes are already active within: Agriculture, Seafood Industries, Grocery, Hardware and Lumber, Finance, Utility, Housing, Media, Franchise, Businesses, Health Care, School, and Child Care for goods and services. Again, Native Individuals and their business partners have establish successful companies and even establishing a Native Business Niche in the procurement area with contracts with federal government agencies, state agencies, and military contracts. Already in place are Native American technical advisors, business advisors, Native Business Owners, knowledge base and data of Native Opportunities across Indian Country, USA. The Stage is set for the formation of 12 National Native Business Alliances for we already have in place many resources from colleges and universities, Native Business leadership, wealth of existing Native Organizations that are already leading Tribes down the path of prosperity.
Do we need 12 regional Native Business Alliances for all of Indian Country, USA? The Tribal leadership across Indian Country for many decades has confronted the powers to be in Washington, DC for now over 227 years hoping for some resolution on the problems and issues we confront on a daily basis. Like the tribes that are already making progress with their tribal economies it is time all tribes greatly increase more Native Businesses and once and for all eliminate poverty among our Native people. Instead of poverty being in double digit numbers it’s time to reduce it to zero.
Every single person has leadership ability. “Some step up and take them. Some don’t. My answer was to step up and lead.” Wilma Mankiller, Cherokee It is within each and every Tribe to develop and grow our tribal economies.
