Writing the perfect horse advert
Essential Points:
Riding is only part of horse ownership and it is important to find out what a horse is like to handle on the ground before you consider purchasing. This is why it is vitally important to include the following points in your advert:
- What is your horse like with the farrier? Are they kept barefoot?
- Can your horse be clipped easily?
- Will your horse load into both a trailer and a horse box?
- Can you catch your horse straight away or do you need heaps of treats just to get their attention?
- Does your horse travel well or do they panic and go over the bar?
- Does your horse have any known vices, e.g. cribbing, weaving, box walking, etc?
- What are they like to lead? Do they need a halter or a chifney to be led safely?
It sounds obvious, but you should include your horse’s vital statistics such as age, height, breed, breeding tree (if known) and where in the country he can be seen and tried. You will be surprised how many people miss out or list incorrectly one of their horse’s most important facts and figures and then wonder why their advert is overlooked.
Ridden temperament:
Very few people buy a horse purely to keep as a pet so make sure you include information about your horse’s ridden temperament. Include what your horse is like ridden alone and in company and how good he is in traffic. If your horse is strong or not suitable for a novice, make sure you mention it in your advert to save yourself a lot of wasted time with viewings by potential buyers who are obviously not going to be suitable.
Promote your horse:
Your advert is your chance to show off your horse’s talents. If your horse has had an amazing competitive career, then show it off in your advert. Everyone is looking for a pony they can have fun on but at the same time compete successfully should they want to. A horse or pony that has a few competitions listed in their advert is more likely to gain the attention of a potential buyer, even if they have no intention of competing, because it allows them to keep their options open.
If your horse is a serious competition prospect, include their winnings and points to date as well as any qualifiers or finals competed at. If you are currently competing, include the level you are competing at and the level you are training for at home.
Honesty:
You risk legal action being taken against you if you lie in your advert and the horse turns out to be not as advertised. Also, while you may get more viewings, anyone actually trying your horse will realise the horse is not as described and you could end up wasting a lot of time with buyers that are just not suitable and never will be.
Price
The current economic climate means that horses’ values have fallen, and it is important that you include a realistic asking price if you want to sell your horse quickly.
