What chance do i have to become a commercial pilot in the airforce?
I want to be a commercial pilot in a few years. I am in high school now. I have straight A’s so i am definately going to college. What should i major in to help my chances. After that i heard the air force is good. What is the minimum time i can be in there for and what can i do to help my chances to get in to the commercial piloting program. I am an eagle scout, sea scout, boat pilot, certified seamen, and certified in search and rescue. It seems like all of that will help me in the navy more though…
With all that seamanship, as you suggest, you sound like a good candidate for the Navy.
I enlisted in the Navy at age 20 with a BA in math. I enlisted rather than pursue an officer program because, at the time, I didn’t know if I wanted to make the commitment. When it came time for me to extend for my E-6, somebody resurrected my degree and recommended OCS. I accepted and retired at 45.
Granted, the Navy’s not for everybody. But, with your background, I’d say you might make a good Navy officer.
Now, that said, no branch of the military is in business to train people for civilian careers. They train people for military careers. No doubt, as a Naval Aviator you’ll be trained to do stuff that is far beyond anything a commercial pilot would ever have to do. But you get that training in the Navy because a Navy pilot needs it… not because it’ll look good on your civilian resume.
Seems to me that I recall something in Scouting that goes, “Duty to God. Duty to Country. Duty to others. Duty to self.” Sweating your civilian resume sounds a little like you’re getting yourself out ahead of Country…. doesn’t it seem a little that way to you?
When I went in, I really had no fixed agenda. While in Boot Camp, a specialty recruited me. I was asked to report for an interview. It was just me and this guy. As I recall, after a brief period of silence, the first words he said were, “Do you want to die for your country?” I can’t remember my answer exactly, but it was something like, “I joined the Navy to serve my country. If I have to die in that service. I’m willing to do so. But death, for any reason, isn’t first on my list of things to do after lunch.” I guess he liked my answer. I was involved in that field for the next 25 years.
I retired at 45, got a couple more degrees, and got a job that had nothing whatsoever to do with my specialty. But most officers — aviation and Staff excluded — are generalists. If they’re any good, they can pick up and manage anything. I made enough money in the next 12 years to purchase and pay for a house and develop a sizable retirement fund. I retired again at age 60. Now I can travel just about anywhere in the world for free. My medical and dental is free. In fact, my only real expenses today are my phone, my Internet access, and gas, insurance and license for my car.
I could have gotten out after four. A lot did. Some of them worked their way up their corporate ladders into those 500 square foot, glassed in, corner offices way up in those tall office buildings. Today they’re as old as I am. They’re working 50-60 hours a week just to make ends meet. In their rare free moments, when they’re not popping pills for their ulcers, they probably dream about travel, adventure, maybe even taking up sky diving or SCUBA diving… if they can ever find the time and money.
All those things they dream about, I did that when I was young enough to enjoy it… and I got paid to do it. Know what I did in my second career? I, because of my training, resolved problems that those guys in those big offices caused because they didn’t know anything about the military. I managed military contracts on the West Coast for a management consulting firm. I got that job because of my education, my military experience, my management experience, and because of my recent security clearance.
Today I live in a Veterans Home. The cost is more than offset by the income from the rent of my home to an officer from a nearby Air Force base. That makes my two retirement checks each month effectively net income. I get up when I want. I go to bed when I want. I spend summers around a pool. I spend the winters at the gym. And, if I want to get rid of my car, transportation is free. Entertainment is free. Sporting events are free. It’s a rough life, but I’m doing my best to get used to it.
As far as a major, I believe you can get into the program with a degree in just about anything. I know a young lady who, at 19 is a junior in aeronautical engineering at a college in New York. She wants to fly jets. She’s in an ROTC program. Naturally courses in math and physics will help. I found that math helps in almost everything.
