Sacagawea’s Life
The Presidential [Dollars] symbolize the latest attempt by the US Mint to flow into a one dollar coin within the United States. It is a noble ambition… effectively, a minimum of it’s a worthy attempt to save some money. Dollar coins cost pennies to make, they usually last an extended, lengthy time. Paper [dollars] do not cost a lot to make both, but they solely last about six months on average.
Will the general public actually use them? Does it matter?
The greenback coin has never been wildly popular with the public. Again in 1794, when the primary US greenback coin was launched, a dollar was a variety of money. Folks did not need lots of them day to day. That was fine. The fledgling US mint was initially a jury rigged institution not known for its efficiency. Mintages were low. And apart from, the Spanish silver “piece of eight” was much more plentiful. It was acknowledged by the public as a coin made from good silver. The US Congress specified that the brand new American greenback coin be made to a specification similar to that of the Spanish coin, which it additionally allowed to circulate as authorized tender till 1857.
By the time the mint had developed into a more significant establishment, with ample capacity to produce cash of top of the range in enough amount, the necessity for the still massive silver greenback was threatened, first by the Civil Battle, during which cash of all sizes were hoarded by the citizenry, after which, as an outgrowth of the wartime coin shortage, the growing acceptance of paper money. Paper [dollars] have been more convenient, especially in the populous Eastern states. Now, it’s fascinating to know, that although the public, besides on the gaming tables in Nevada, has never been keen on the “silver cartwheels” – the federal government has not often let that stand in the best way of greenback coin production. When silver mines overproduced during the 1870s, and the value of silver was falling, Congress passed laws requiring that, for each paper dollar printed, a silver dollar can be struck.
And so they had been – by the millions. But they did not circulate, no less than not within the portions being produced. Many of the silver [dollars] of that period had been put into canvas bags and saved in financial institution vaults. Many have been stored on the mint. I have personally noticed the curved indentations made by these cash within the lead lined partitions of a San Francisco Mint vault when I toured the building years ago. And when I was a child in the Nineteen Fifties, I might take a twenty dollar bill to my local bank and alternate it for a roll of twenty silver dollars. Many of these had been in uncirculated condition with dates in the 1870s, 80s, and 90s!
By 1935 the mint had struck its final conventional 90% silver one greenback coin.
Moving ahead to 1971 a brand new greenback coin appeared. This was the Eisenhower dollar, which commemorated the first President remembered by many of the Boomer Generation. It was the same measurement because the outdated silver greenback, but at best, contained barely 40% silver. The primary time I obtained “Ike” [dollars] in circulation was in 1972 at a gasoline station in California, simply past the Nevada state line. It was the only time I ever saw them in change.
