“What is a Proof Coin?” and why are they often cheaper, when they look like the real deal?
and this answer isn’t good enough …
Definition: A proof coin is a coin struck using a special, high-quality minting process, and made especially for collectors. Keep in mind that the term {i]proof always refers to a type of coin, not to a coin’s grade.

Why would a proof coin be valued at a lower price, sometimes, by coin collectors than an uncirculated coin of the same denomination, date, and (sometimes) mint?
Here are two possible reasons that this pricing discrepancy may sometimes occur; there may well be others:
1. Scarcer in uncirculated than in proof. Frequently, proof coins are kept by collectors – out of circulation and protected from wear or damage in their original cases – in high percentages relative to their original mintages. In contrast, with some dates, mints, and denominations of coins intended for circulation, nearly all of these coins may become slightly, or highly, circulated, and few uncirculated coins may still exist. The remaining uncirculated coins – and particularly coins in the higher MS- grades – thus may become prized by collectors.
* Lower mintages. While most of the time proof coins are minted in smaller quantities than non-proof coins, there are some – uncommon – exceptions. In those cases, the uncirculated coins have lower mintages, and often are valued higher by collectors.
One instance that comes to mind: there are many commemorative coins minted in limited quantities for smaller countries around the world by the Franklin Mint. In some cases, that mint has struck fewer coins in uncirculated condition than in proof condition.
Franklin Mint struck $100 gold coins of Belize in the 1970s, for example, and in many of those years, the uncirculated coins had significantly lower mintages than the proofs: in 1976, there were 216 pieces struck in uncirculated (cataloged as KM-52), contrasted with 11,000 proof coins minted.
